Scotland
Education is a devolved power in Scotland and consequently has its own associated policy documents:
The Literacy Action Plan emphasises the Scottish Government’s commitment to raising the literacy skills of Scotland’s citizens of all ages.
More specifically for adults, the strategic guidance Adult Literacies in Scotland 2020 (ALIS 2020), launched in 2010 outlines more detailed plans to improve the literacies capabilities of Scotland’s adults over the next 10 years.
ALIS2020 states that we should have a skilled workforce who promote high quality learning and teaching, helping learners to achieve their goals. The Professional Development Framework sets out roles, competencies and qualifications for Scotland’s literacies workforce.
Community Learning & Development (CLD) resources that also have relevance to adult literacies include:
- CLD Strategic Guidance for Community Planning Partnerships. Appendix A gives a particularly useful summary of the policy context for Scotland in a one page summary.
- Skills for Scotland.
- Curriculum for Excellence is a curriculum for children and young people aged 3-18 years.
